Hot tubs are pretty hardy, but to keep them in tip top condition – and to save on energy or repair costs – it’s worth being prepared for stormy weather and high winds. Here are some tips on how to protect your hot tub or swim spa from the elements.
Choose the Right Spot
Where you position your hot tub or swim spa is the first step in keeping it protected from the elements. Placing it in a shady spot will protect it from any sun damage, while making sure it’s sheltered from the wind and not too close to any trees will also help to avoid any damage from debris or the elements.
Get a Well-Fitting Cover
This is not only essential for energy efficiency and money saving, but is also vital to ensuring your spa shell is protected from the elements. Most dealers will recommend a cover when you purchase your hot tub.

Weigh It Down with Water
If you’re in an area that’s prone to flooding, or if you’re expecting high winds or gales, then don’t be tempted to empty your hot tub. Making sure your hot tub is full will help to keep it anchored in high winds, and help to avoid the risk of it blowing over. It could also help to keep it in place in case of flooding. Don’t try to weigh your spa down with anything else, though, as this could cause damage instead of prevent it.
Check Your Cover Condition
As noted earlier, a well-fitting, good-quality cover is essential for protecting your hot tub. Be sure to check your cover regularly for signs of damage, and replace if necessary. If you’re not sure if your cover needs replacing, check out our blog post Is it Time to Replace My Hot Tub Cover?

Secure with Cover Locks and Straps
Use straps and clips to make sure your cover stays in place. Check yours to make sure they’re still in good condition, and replace if not. Make sure every clip is locked and secured to prevent any wind from catching the cover and pulling it open or even blowing it off. This will help to protect your tub from damage, stop debris from getting inside and prevent your cover from catching and causing damage.
Clear the Area
Check the area around your hot tub for anything that might blow into your spa and cause damage, such as garden furniture, bins or loose debris.
